Things had been trending this way since it was known their was mutual interest with Costello and Mississippi State, but now its official. Costello committed to Mississippi State after having a successful career at Stanford, where he threw for over 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns in 3 seasons. Costello is the first big get of the Mike Leach era, and really shows his influence by getting the best transfer qb on the market this offseason. Costello is also considered to be a top draft prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft so it will be really interesting to see a backfield of him and another prospect Kylin Hill on Saturdays in Starkville.

Costello was rated as a high 4* star coming out of Ranhco Santa Margarita, California and was rated as the 3rd best pro style QB in country in the 2016 class. 247 Sports described his skills in their scouting report of him:

Costello is one of the best pure throwers in the West region as a junior. He has a big arm, can make every throw and is very accurate. He shows nice touch on the deep ball and can throw the outs and comebacks on a rope. He’s a cerebral QB with a high football IQ and understands how to play the position. He’s a very competitive kid with a strong work ethic off the field and is a natural leader as well.-Biggins

Mike Leach and his staff will now have another talented quarterback to head the air-raid offense at Mississippi State. Now the focus will move to finding a talented safety from the portable to strengthen the back end of the Mississippi State defense and maybe a wide receiver to give Costello more options when he drops back on September 5th.
